Chef goes NUTS!!

I had a wonderful time catering an event in St Louis tonight – it was at Mound City Nuts on Olive Blvd. in University City. Mound City Nuts has been around since 1917 and the current owners are very warm, engaging, and exceptionally knowledgeable about all things nuts! They have such a wonderful variety available that includes not just the old standbys of peanuts and pecans, but also almonds of all kinds, walnuts, pecans, and even filburts. Now there’s a nut I haven’t seen since they were in my grandmother’s kitchen and us kids wouldn’t go near them because they just looked wierd.

They also have nut butters made on site from peanuts and almonds. There was one nut butter I HAD to go home with – chocolate peanut butter. OMG – was that DELICIOUS! I paired it simply with some delicious apples I sliced up that came from Eckert’s Farm.

Nuts have gotten a bad reputation lately because of individuals that have nut allergies. For those who aren’t allergic, nuts are a wonderful compact little source of nutritional power! They not only contain monounsaturated fats, but also a great source of fiber and protein. Because of the fat content, they are very filling and are a wonderful choice as a snack to get you through to dinner (which, of course, you had delivered to your door by Chef Cari!).

So join me and let’s go nuts!
